Matthew Lockwood is a writer and historian.

He is the author of This Land of Promise (William Collins, 2024), To Begin the World Over Again (Yale, 2019), and Conquest of Death: Violence and the Birth of the Modern English State (2017), as well as the forthcoming Explorers: a New History.

He received his PhD from Yale in 2014, where his dissertation won the Hans Gatzke Prize for the best dissertation in European history. He held posts at Yale and the University of Warwick before coming to the University of Alabama, where he is an Associate Professor in the Department of History.
